The link between vitamin D and weight
Vitamin D levels play a large role in weight loss or gain, and only recently was this link discovered. When you have low vitamin D levels, weight loss can be extremely difficult, if not impossible. However, once the levels are restored to a healthy state, weight loss can occur. Scientists at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center examined this link during one of their recent research studies. They examined a group of overweight women, between the ages of 50 and 75. All of the women in the study had low vitamin D levels.
One study that offered interesting results compared oral vitamin D supplements taken over a 12 month period to the placebo. The study measured changes in weight, body composition, and metabolic markers. The volunteers were given vitamin D and asked to participate in a diet and exercise program. According to the results, the women involved in the study who became replete with vitamin D achieved more weight loss than those who did exercise and dieting alone.
While many vitamins have been in the spotlight before as weight loss solutions, researchers from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center have stated that vitamin D is finally in the spotlight, but there’s still a lot to understanding in terms of its link to weight loss.
The information offered from researchers and through studies is a key indicator that vitamin D does offer weight loss benefits, especially to women.
