Choose Your Solutions for Blood Sugar Control

What’s your blood sugar control like? Do you have a handle on it? Or are you considered a brittle diabetic who needs a lot more help than what you have been getting for it?

Blood sugar control is clearly tied to your health. When your blood sugar levels are too high, sugar deposits along your nerves, causing numbness, tingling and other odd sensations. When it deposits on the lens of your eyes, it causes cataracts. When it deposits in your kidneys, it causes kidney disease. Every organ the excess sugar touches experiences negative changes that lead to its dysfunction.

There are two primary ways to treat blood sugar levels that are hard to manage: medications (pharmaceutical) and herbs/diet (alternative). Both have their plusses and minuses.

Medications for blood sugar control

Metformin, sulfonylureas, repaglinide and nateglinide are the four primary types of diabetic medications for lowering blood sugar levels when they are too high.

  • Metformin  This prescription drug decreases the glucose released from the liver but has symptoms like stomach issues. Over the long term, it has been linked to cataracts and peripheral neuropathy, the feeling that you don’t know where your feet and legs are in space.
  • Sulfonylureas – These work directly on the pancreas, so your body releases more insulin. Side effects may include blood sugar levels that are too low, upset stomach, the feeling that you are irritated, and skin rashes.
  • Repaglinide and Nateglinide also work as the sulfonylureas work and have similar side effects.

Each of these medications, unfortunately, has side effects – and side effects decrease the quality of life you have. The main problem with these medications is that you’ll be dependent on them. Before committing to prescribed blood sugar control medications, consider an alternative or supplemental treatment method using natural healing herbs.

Natural healing methods to control blood sugar

Natural healing uses trusted herbs that have been used over the centuries in many civilizations to lower blood sugar. Some of these herbs include cinnamon, bitter melon, Gymnema, stevia, and fenugreek.

  • Cinnamon – Contains polyphenols that help improve insulin sensitivity while lowering fasting blood sugar levels.
  • Bitter Melon – This herb works directly on insulin resistance, getting your muscles to accept the insulin instead of reject it. It lowers blood sugar levels up to 40%.
  • Gymnema – This plant decreases the absorption of sugar from the digestive system. It also stimulates the insulin production in the body and may help regenerate the pancreas.
  • Stevia – Stevioside lowers blood sugar levels about 18%.
  • Fenugreek - This herb contains 4-hydroxyisoleucine, an amino acid that helps the pancreas produce insulin. When you have more insulin, you’ll have better blood sugar levels.

What are the downsides to taking herbs for blood sugar control? You’ll want to work with a natural health practitioner who can give recommendations and supervise your herbal healing journey. You’ll have to still work with your medical doctor because your medication dosages will most likely be needing adjustment within a few weeks.

You’ll also want to read up on the herbs to educate yourself about what’s going on with them, why you’re taking two capsules a day or one capsule a day. However, there aren’t any long-term side effects to the herbs other than they will lower your blood sugar.

Trying some other options when you have a blood sugar control problem is important. Regular medications will only take you so far…
