5 Easy Ways to Live Healthier

You'd be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn't want to lead a longer, healthier life. But the demands of good health can feel overwhelming, particularly to health newbies. You really don't have to shell out hundreds of dollars for a gym membership and nutritionist, and good health doesn't have to eat up every spare moment in your day. Instead, try practicing these five incredibly easy strategies for healthier living. When you begin seeing results, you just might be inspired to try something a bit more challenging.

1. Drink more water

Try this challenge for a week: Every time you get a craving for an unhealthy food, commit to drinking a cup of water. You'll help quell some of your cravings, and you'll have more energy with clearer skin and healthier hair. Water is the foundation of good health, yet it costs nothing, won't fill you up, and won't weigh you down.

2. Find new ways to be active

Hate exercise? Then stop pressuring yourself to do something that makes you miserable. Instead, commit to increasing your activity level. Try parking at the far end of the parking lot, taking an extra loop around the mall, or taking multiple trips to carry in your groceries. Once you've got that covered, expand your activity repertoire by committing to doing one active event – such as bowling or a team sport – each week. Small changes add up quickly. Even if you only burn an extra 100 calories a day, that adds up to losing 10 pounds each year!

3. Drink a smoothie

If you love sweet snacks and hate veggies, try adding smoothies into your diet. Mix a handful of delicious fruits with a veggie or two, then top it off with a tablespoon of honey. Voila! You've got a whole meal in a glass, and have knocked out a significant portion of your recommended daily allowance of fruits and veggies.

4. Love your body

The time to love your body isn't next week, next year, or when you finally lose weight. You deserve to feel good about yourself right now. Body stress can lead to weight gain, depression, and low self-esteem, so ditch the bad body image. Every day, remind yourself of one thing you love about your body. Whether it's your strong arms, incredible endurance, or ability to type faster than everyone else in your office, your body has something amazing to offer, so celebrate it!

5. Take time for yourself

The way we live – bombarded with texts and phone calls, constantly under pressure to meet deadlines – is anything but natural or healthy. But there's no reversing what we've already created. So embrace the chaos, but take some time for yourself every day. Doing something you love, taking time to meditate, chatting up a friend, or even just indulging in a long nap can each give you the emotional and physical strength you need to face an increasingly complex and challenging world.
